PHILIPPINES-ITALY - DIPLOMATIC RELSATIONSSHIP - 65th ANNIVERSARY

Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Italy were established on 09 July 1947. On the same day, a Treaty of Friendship and General Relations was signed in Rome. The Treaty was ratified on 10 December 1948.

The first Philippine diplomatic Mission to Italy was established on 05 July 1948 as a legation, subsequently elevated to the level of an Embassy on 09 August 1956.

An Air Transport Agreement was signed on 25 January 1969 in Manila, establishing direct air links between the Philippines and Italy. Rome became one of the major entry and exit points in Europe of Philippines Airlines.

In February 1969, an Agreement on Scientific and Technical Cooperation was signed in Manila. It came into force in May of the same year.

An RP-Italy Convention for the Avoidance of Double Taxation with respect to Taxes on Income and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion was signed in Rome on 05 December 1980 and ratified by the Philippines on 28 November 1983. The Convention came into force on 15 June 1990 upon the Exchange of Instruments of Ratification which took place in Manila.

Following the visit to Manila in March 1986 of Bruno Corti, Italian Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Italy increased its development assistance to the Philippines from approximately US$ 3 million in 1985 to approximately US$ 330 million for the period ending 1990.  http://www.philital.com/english/relation/relations_diplomaticb.htm

Stamp Designs feature popular tourist destinations in the Philippines and in Italy:

Banaue Rice Terraces.  Described as the eighth wonder of the world.  Carved out of the hillside by Ifugao tribes 2000 to 3000 years ago without the aid of machinery to provide level steps where the natives plant rice, as they are still in use today.  It stretches like stepping stones to the sky - some reaching an altitude of 1500m (4920ft).  It is considered as one of mankind's greatest engineering feat. If the terraces were laid end to end, they would stretch half way around the world.  http://www.philsite.net/banaue.htm

Cinque Terre.   A rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera.  It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. "The Five Lands" is composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinque_Terre
