Philippines-Nigeria - 50th Year of Diplomatic Relations

Nigeria and the Philippines established there bilateral, diplomatic and trade relation in August 1962.  Nigeria has an embassy in Manila and the Philippines has an embassy in Abuja.    Nigeria continues to be a hub for Overseas Filipinos primarily workers involved in the oil, gas and construction industry of the country. While Filipinos go to Nigeria for employment, Nigerians go to the Philippines to pursue their higher education studies.

Depicted on stamps (of both countries) are flowers from both nations:

SAMPAGUITA (Jasminum sambac).   National Flower of the Philippines.  The sampaguita flower became popular among the Filipinos because of its simplicity as well as with its scent. But what made this flower really popular among the Filipinos is its significance in Philippines history.  The name “sampaguita” is believed to have come from the Filipino words “sumpa kita,” meaning “I promise you.” In early days sampaguita garlands are exchanged by young couples as a pledge of their love.  Among other popular uses of the sampaguita is with garlands. Filipinos string the flowers into leis, corsages and crowns and distill its oils and sell them in stores, streets, and outside churches. The garlands may be used to welcome guests, or as an offering or adornment in religious altars.  These flowers are also known for its medicinal use.  http://societysix.wordpress.com/history/

DAISY (Mesembryanthemum).  Mesembryanthemum plants have large, daisy like flowers with glistening petals.   Their  flowers open in full sun, and are also drought tolerant. Frost-tender succulents, they thrive in sunny, dry conditions and locations.   They bloom for weeks in the spring and summer.  Mesembryanthemum daisies have flat, succulent leaves up to 3 inches long, with the plants hugging the ground. Flowers have dark centers and are colored pink, white, purple, lavender, crimson, or orange. Plants grow up to 8 inches high and spread to 12 inches wide. The flowers close at night and on cloudy days.
