NATIONAL TEACHERS' MONTH
President Benigno S. Aquino III declared September 5 to October 5 of
every year as "National Teachers' Month" as per Proclamation No.
242.
"The United Nations Education,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated October 5
of every year as World Teachers’ Day, which is a day to celebrate
the central role that teachers play in guiding the children, youth
and adults through the life-long learning process," Aquino said
in the proclamation.
Aquino also stressed the need to generate support in the Philippines
for "World Teachers’ Day," celebrated October 5 worldwide.
The Department of Education is spearheading
the preparations and activities for the month-long 2014 National
Teachers’ Month (NTM) which officially kicks off September 5 and
will culminate on October 4, a day before the World Teachers’ Day
(WTD).
Education Secretary Armin Luistro has directed
officials in both public and private elementary and secondary
schools to come up with activities that would honor the teachers and
their profession.
Luistro said that the NTM and WTD are being celebrated to
acknowledge the crucial role teachers play in building the future.
The month-long celebration, he explained, aims
to give emphasis on the crucial role, loyal service and dedicated
commitment of teachers in developing globally-minded citizens,
nurturing families, strengthening communities and building the
nation. Schools are
urged to take part in the celebrations to revitalize the image of
and respect for teaching as a vocation by increasing public
awareness on the value of teachers in the Philippine society.
During the NTM and WTD celebrations, schools
are also expected to, among others, come up with feature stories or
write-ups about their teachers in their school publications and
websites, sending letters and messages of thanks and gratitude and
recitation of “A Prayer for Teacher”.
NTM is also an opportunity to enhance the image of the
teaching profession and to likewise generate widespread support and
assistance for teachers.
But, more than anything, Luistro stressed that the NTM and WTD is an
expression of gratitude for the positive influences of teachers.
