MAHAGUYOG FESTIVAL – SANTO TOMAS, BATANGAS

Santo Tomas (Sto. Tomas)  is a Philippine municipality in the province Batangas.  Santo Tomas is considered part of the Mega Manila, a continuous expansion of Metro Manila’s economic developments. As proof of the town’s continuous progress, the country’s first Industrial Park is located in the municipality. This makes Santo Tomas more advanced when it comes to urbanization compared to other municipalities found in Batangas.

Santo Tomas town fiesta  is called the “Mahaguyog” festival.  MAHAGUYOG was derived from the town’s main products – Mais, Halaman, Gulay, Niyog (Corn, Plants, Vegetables, Coconut).   The said event is a 12-day celebration which starts late February culminating to March 7, the town’s founding day.   In 2015, it commemorates its 349th anniversary.  The festival is made up of a series of singing competitions, street dances, sports competition, beauty pageants and of course, masses and novenas.

Overall, the town lives on farming and agriculture. Their primary products are cassava, coconut, rice and other fruits. But, in the recent years, many land developing companies started to locate and build numerous residential and executive subdivisions and villages in Santo Tomas due its proximity to Manila and its city-like features while being away from its traffic and hustle. This is also one of the reasons why many decide to transfer and settle down in the city for good, contributing to Santo Tomas’ continuous economic boost.
