City of San Pablo - 75th Charter Day

The City of San Pablo, a first class city in the province of Laguna, is one of the country's oldest cities. The City of San Pablo lies in the southern portion of Laguna province. This city is otherwise known as the "City of Seven Lakes" because it has seven lakes - Sampalok, Palakpakin, Yambo, Bunot, Pandin, Mohikap, and Calibato.

By Land Area, it is the largest in the province of Laguna. By population, it ranks fifth in the province of Laguna. San Pablo City was once part of the Archdiocese of Lipa since 1910 but on November 28, 1967 it became an independent diocese and became as the Diocese of San Pablo.

The first settlers who chose this area as their home arrived over a hundred years ago, attracted by its breathtaking and legendary beauty, gentle climate and prolific lakes. Aetas, Dumagtas and Muslims, who came passing through Laguna de Bay, made their mark on the land.  They developed trails of which are still being used to this day. They named the place upland "Sampalok" .  The first Spanish troops arrived in the upland village of Sampalok in 1571 lead by Capt. Juan de Salcedo.  He announced governance in the name of the king of Spain.  In 1586 Sampalok was renamed San Pablo de los Montes in honor of St. Paul The First Hermit.

Sometime in 1647, San Pablo de los Montes became an independent municipality. The first recommended Gobernadorcillo or Captain was Bartolome Maghayin.  In 1926, the San Pablenos fought a long way to establish independence from the Province of Laguna.  Fourteen long years had passed before the charter bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Tomas Dizon, was approved on May 7, 1940 by virtue of Commonwealth Act. No. 520. The first appointed Mayor was Potenciano Malvar.

Today, San Pablo City has thousands of visitors due to its beauty, richness of culture and warmth of its people. Development arises as time passes by which help the city add more attractions as well as preserve its natural beauty.
