DRY SEAL CANCELLATION.  Because the Asean 50 Souvenir Sheet is in special gold foil with embossing, a special Dry Seal was used for FDCs.  The issue date is January 30, while the stamps were issued earlier, January 15.  The dry seal was used on the souvenir sheets because black cancellations by rubber stamps can easily be removed from the gold foil by simply rubbing off the ink.

ASEAN 50, PHILIPPINES 2017 - “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World”

ASEAN 50 commemorative stamps celebrating Philippines chairmanship was launched in President Rodrigo Duterte’s home city, Davao, coinciding with the opening of the ASEAN 2017 commemorative activities on Sunday, January 15.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Brunei Darussalam then joined on 7 January 1984, Viet Nam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN.

The ASEAN is committed to intensifying community building through enhanced regional cooperation and integration, in particular by establishing an ASEAN Political-Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community as its main pillars.

It will be the third time the Philippines will be hosting the regional meet, after it was held in Manila in 1987 under President Cory Aquino and in Cebu in 2007 under President Gloria Arroyo.

President Duterte announced the ASEAN 2017 theme will be  "Partnering for Change, Engaging the World."   In accepting the ASEAN chairmanship, the President said, "We will highlight ASEAN as a model of regionalism and a global player, with the interest of the people at its core."
